Branding

Artist trading is taking the music and channeling its energy though consistent visual style and identity. The brand should be considered as a part of who the artist is. The brand is what leaves an impression on people. This includes the logo, website, photos, performances, and social media posts.

There are 3 Es of branding:

Enabling
The brand should be simple and accessible to anyone who is attracted or direct to the music.

Elevating
The brand should create “an experience through the senses.” Through the help of colors, storytelling, textures, environments, clothing.

Enriching
The brand should create a sense community. Something that the fans can feel part of.

A way to create a brand could be to find a style. For example, the artists Pharrell has a hat that characterizes him. Or Lady Gagas way of dressing - everything is crazy. The artists could find something that identifies them, to make the creation of the brand easier. In Electric Gypsies, Caio, one of the guitarists always wear this particular sunglasses when he is playing. Something that now has become part of his style. The drummer, Igor, is characterized by his long hair. Yet, the rest of the band do not have a specific style, they might want to have something that characterizes each of them.

A brand can defined by focusing on what inspires and drives the artists. The following questions could help define the brand.
  • What are the themes of your work?
  • What values are most important to you as an artists?
  • What inspires you?
  • How would you describe your personal style?
  • How do you want your audience to describe your live show?
  • What parts of your personality do you feel comfortable sharing?

The best way for Mariana and I to help create this band’s brand is to really delve deep into what this brand wants. Which will require us to talk and talk until they have an idea of who they are. We will be meeting with the band this week, so watch out for a post about that!
